DREW HUTTON ARRESTED AT CSG BLOCKADE NEAR KYOGLE
Lock the Gate Alliance President Drew Hutton has been arrested at the Doubtful
Creek community blockade against coals seam gas, near Kyogle in the Northern
Rivers.
In a show of peaceful solidarity with the people of the Northern Rivers, Hutton sat
in the middle of the road in front of the Doubtful Creek site where Metgasco intend
to drill.
The community of the Northern Rivers has been protesting against exploratory
drilling by Metgasco for two months during which time close to 40 people have been
arrested at two different drilling sites.
Drew Hutton is the fourth arrest of the day - earlier this morning one of the
'Knitting Nannas' was arrested whilst knitting in a tripod perched high above the
road whilst another woman was extracted from a tunnel beneath the road.
More than 300 concerned citizens are at the site today with about 100 police also in
attendance.
One man arrested last month remains in Kempsey Gaol for his opposition to coal
seam gas in the region.
"When governments refuse to accept responsibility on important issues like coal
seam gas, it is up to the community to put an end to this sort of madness," Hutton
said earlier today.
"I'm here in solidarity with the people of the Northern Rivers and I'm happy to be
arrested alongside these brave people. There are times when the most honourable
place to be is in gaol" he said.

3. Weather forecaster Aidan advises:
Highly destructive Cyclone Metgasco backed by state force is expected to start to move
slowly northward from Glenugie this afternoon. This hazardous and erratic unnatural
system will bring damaged aquifers and toxic pollution to the forecast area. All
emergency personnel throughout the Northern Rivers are requested to remain on high
alert for the passage of a dangerous drill rig associated with this destructive event.
Residents are advised to prepare themselves by forming locality based emergency
response groups and to utilise non violent direct action to protect communities from the
effects of this dangerous event.
Be warned that destructive cyclone Metgasco is combined with excessive use of state
based force and may carry riot police hazards at moderate to extreme levels.
All communities in the northern rivers are at risk from this dangerous and destructive
system which has occurred as the result of the collusion of a low in public accountability
eminating from the Sydney region and and a number of influences from offshore.
Use caution if approaching this system.
Non violent direct action is recommended as the best defensive response available to
embattled communities.

4. Glenugie desperation
Media Release Wednesday 6th February
Severe event warning:
One man delays drill rig for 9 hours at Glenugie
This morning at 5.30am one man and two women locked themselves on to a 'mad max'
vehicle at the gates of the current core drilling site at Glenugie near Grafton. The action
comes as the drilling there is finishing and Metgasco prepares to move the rig to Doubtful
Creek near Kyogle.
Police rescue were in attendance and took the man to Grafton Police Station at 2pm. Up
to 70 people were at Glenugie today to show their support and continue their ongoing
protest against the drilling activities being undertaken by Metgasco.
Local residents have maintained the Glenugie blockade the blockade for 76 days, and true
to their words have maintained their resistance to the very last moment of Metgasco’s
operation.
Started.
Explaining why they would delay the rig’s departure Denise Dean spokesperson for
Yuraygir Coast and Range Alliance said “While we don't want it here, we don't want it
anywhere else either. This filthy industry is a violation of human rights. The risks to public
health alone are enough to insist on an immediate halt to CSG exploration and
production."
Another local resident Sarah Fletcher said "People from across the valley and across the
region have come to support us as they know that their communities are also under
threat from this destructive industry".
While police numbers were low at Glenugie today the Northern Rivers Community is
reeling in response to the excessive use of force by the O'Farrell government as it tries to
overcome community resistance.
“A government that will not listen to its people leaves the community no other option
than to take direct action to protect their right to clean air, unpolluted land and a healthy
future.” said Lynette Eggins from Clarence Alliance Against CSG. "They have ignored us
for too long and the Northern Rivers communities will not give up against the mining
company invasion, community resistance is now a reality 365 days a year. The state
government is using excessive force to impose this industry on unwilling communities."
“Tomorrow is another day as the large group of people at Doubtful Creek await the
rig. Numbers have been steadily growing each day and it is likely that once word goes out
that the rig is coming we will get even more” said Leah Hobbs spokesperson for Kyogle
Group Against Gas.

9. Innovative blockade sign:
“Warning to riot police – hip replacement, handle with care”.
10. A reader has suggested an idea that may enable all of those people who are
feeling very frustrated watching on because they have to go to work or care
for family etc and can't attend the blockades themselves.
Interested people could send emails to both Govt and Shadow ministers saying
something like – “I want you to know that I would be protesting at the
Blockades against CSG too but I have to go to work/care for family today”.
If the Government received floods of emails it would increase the political pressure
and add to their awareness of the actual number of voices protesting against CSG.

* The fight of our lives, for our lives continues on the Northern Rivers. Drill rig is also expected at other locations. Community minded people are on the ground defending land at a Metgasco drill site near Grafton – Glenugie, BUT other locations are set to be drilled by the same drill rig: - at Banyabba, Clarence Valley and - at Doubtful Creek, Kyogle. Soon after that the drill rigs will roll into Bentley, Richmond Valley.

*** Coal seam gas in the Northern Rivers ***
Exploration for coal seam gas has been occurring in the Northern Rivers since the early 2000's, with almost the entire region now covered by petroleum exploration licenses and applications. As awareness of the negative impacts of unconventional gas mining overseas has spread, and as we begin to see the rollout of massive coal seam gas fields over the border in Queensland, opposition to this industry in the region has steadily grown. From the birth of the Keerrong Gas Sqaud in late 2010 to the formation of Mid-Clarence Group Against Gas in March 2012, there has been a mushrooming of community groups, with over twenty different groups now active in the fight to protect the land, water and precious natural assets of the region.
Opposition to CSG in the Northern Rivers
From rallies and marches numbering in the thousands, to large demonstrations outside gas company premises and politicians offices, and with thousands of letters to politicians and extensive submissions to government inquiries, the people of the region have mobilised in an unprecedented fashion. This people’s movement brings together people from all parts of society - from farmers to nurses and from retirees to university students, from environmental scientists to carpenters, and from teachers to small business owners. It unites people of all political persuasions in a movement that is growing in strength and diversity with each passing day
